HOW TO USE IT

Look for signals, not a score.

This isn't a test of whether your organization is doing data “right.” The goal is to make friction easier to name.

A reporting problem may actually be an ownership problem. A technology problem may be a capacity problem. An information problem may reveal a decision that has never been made clearly.

1-3 selected

Emerging Signals

A few patterns are surfacing. These may be isolated issues or early indicators that data, systems, roles, or technology decisions need more clarity before friction grows.

4-8 selected

Patterned Friction

Several signals are appearing across one or more categories. This suggests the organization may be relying on informal workarounds, unclear ownership, or disconnected systems in ways that are starting to affect decisions and daily work.

9+ selected

Systemic Strain

Signals are showing up across many parts of the organization. The issue is probably not one tool, report, or policy. It may point to broader misalignment between information practices, responsibilities, technology, capacity, and trust.

Why this matters

Better decisions depend on more than better data.

When nonprofit leaders struggle to get reliable answers, the problem isn't always the data itself.

It might be unclear responsibilities, disconnected systems, reporting requirements that don't support learning, insufficient technical capacity, or information practices that haven't kept pace with the organization.

Understanding what's happening is the first step toward deciding what needs to change.

What comes next

Start with what your responses revealed.

The purpose of this assessment isn't to give your organization a grade. It's to help you recognize patterns, identify questions worth investigating, and decide where to focus your attention.

You may need to improve reporting, clarify responsibilities, review your technology, strengthen information practices, preserve institutional knowledge, or build additional technical capacity.
